Dale T. Smith and Sons Meat Packing of Draper, Utah has issued a Class I recall (high health risk) for 38,200 pounds of beef products distributed to wholesalers and retailers in Salt Lake City and California for further processing and wider distribution. The beef may be contaminated with a strain of the E. coli bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Inspection Services (FSIS).

Doctors who treat kidney dialysis patients should be very concerned about the dialysis product GranuFlo. Many doctors were kept in the dark for nearly five months about how an ingredient in this common dialysis solution had been linked by its manufacturer, Fresenius Medical Care, to a sharp increase in patient heart attacks.

Fun these days seems to come with crowds. In the middle of enjoying a concert or strolling through a festival, it’s easy to forget that being in a crowd also holds an element of danger. If a crowd becomes panicked, for instance, people can get injured or even killed.

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) this morning ordered the transfer and consolidation of all pending and future federal lawsuits involving Pradaxa. The JPML consolidated the actions before The Honorable David R. Herndon of the S.D. of Illinois. This is excellent news for people pursuing justice for injuries or deaths related to this drug.

Two products heavily marketed for school lunches or snacks—Dippin’ Stix Sliced Apples & Caramel with Peanuts and Armour Active Packs Cheese Pizza Lunch Kits—are being recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria. The problem was discovered through voluntary testing by Reichel Foods, Inc., of Rochester, MN, which makes the products. No illnesses have been reported to date.

From the time that I was in law school, I’ve been getting questions from friends and relatives about various things that they saw in high-profile, televised trials or on a television legal drama. The question I hear most often from my non-lawyer friends is, “Is that really what would happen?” For better or worse, most people base their impressions of who and what lawyers are on what they see on TV and in movies.
