“M.C.”–as the child is called for privacy reasons–was born at Greenville Memorial Hospital in 2004 as an intersex child, a condition formerly known as hermaphroditism. The child was born with both male and female genitalia, but at 16-months-old while still an orphan, the Crawfords’ lawsuits allege the state performed gender-selective surgery on M.C., effectively turning the child into a female by removing his male reproductive organs.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Advocates for Informed Choice (AIC) and pro bono counsel for the private law firms of Janet, Jenner & Suggs and Steptoe & Johnson LLP filed a lawsuit today against the South Carolina Department of Social Services, Greenville Hospital System, Medical University of South Carolina and individual employees for performing an irreversible and medically unnecessary surgery on an infant in the state’s care.

A Columbia couple is suing the S.C. Department of Social Services, social workers and doctors for having sexual-reassignment surgery performed on a toddler who was born with “ambiguous genitals,” and both male and female internal sex organs.

The lawyers for the only Jerry Sandusky victim pursuing damages against Penn State in court are arguing against the university’s latest attempt to thwart the case. Led by Baltimore attorney Howard Janet, they fired back in the court papers and told federal Judge Anita Brody that the allegations are specific enough to move forward to the discovery phase of the lawsuit.
