Paxil-Depression Medication-Linked to Serious Side Effects

Paxil (paroxetine) is a popular drug used to treat depression and other mood disorders that has been linked to serious side effects including suicide, birth defects and severe withdrawal symptoms in patients and infants whose mothers took Paxil during pregnancy. For many years manufacturers of this drug did not warn the public adequately about these side effects, not giving patients a chance to make an informed decision about whether Paxil’s risks outweighed its benefits.

Paxil is part of a group of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This popular group of antidepressants also includes Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, Luvox, Venlafaxine, Cymbalta and Bupropion. All of these drugs carry side effects that should be carefully explained by a doctor before using, especially if the patient is a child, adolescent or young adult.

People who have experienced serious reactions from taking Paxil or another SSRI have the right to hold the manufacturer responsible. Although a lawsuit cannot ease the pain or loss of a loved one, it can help compensate for losses in income, quality of life and suffering. An experienced Paxil attorney with Janet, Jenner & Suggs will review your situation and advise you. Consultations are offered free of charge.

Consumer Alert

Paxil is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment of children, because studies presented to the FDA have not shown that Paxil is effective for treating children under 18. Paxil also has been linked to suicidal thoughts and suicide in people younger than 25, and birth defects in infants whose mothers were taking Paxil during pregnancy.

Tell the doctor immediately if you notice worsening depression or other mood conditions or unusual behavior changes. These can include suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, new or worsening anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile or angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, or very rapid speech. Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.

If you’re taking Paxil, you may want to consult with your health care provider about alternative therapies. If you’re pregnant or considering becoming pregnant, consult with your health care provider immediately about possible birth defects.

Studies Link Paxil to Birth Defects

A March 2006 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that infants born to mothers who took SSRIs, including Paxil, in the last half of their pregnancies were six times more likely to develop persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN). Infants with PPHN don’t get enough oxygen and require intensive care to survive. Around 10 to 20 percent die soon after birth and some survivors suffer from deafness and neurological problems.

Based on a separate study, the FDA in 2005 began warning that Paxil was associated with a higher risk of major birth defects in infants whose mothers took Paxil during their first trimester.

Paxil Linked to Suicide and Suicidal Thoughts

Antidepressants can help prevent suicidal thoughts and attempts, and provide other important benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially people younger than 25) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental or mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts and attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with the doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication (especially for people younger than 25), even if treatment is not for a mental or mood condition.
