Topamax Holds Dangers for Pregnant Women

Topamax Holds Dangers for Pregnant Women

Moira was 34 and trying to get pregnant for the first time. For several years her doctor had been treating her for migraines with a drug called topiramate, sold under the brand name Topamax.  When she learned she was pregnant, she was overjoyed. Eight months later she gave birth to a baby boy who was perfect in every way, except that his palate and upper lip had not fused correctly, resulting in a cleft palate.

What caused this?   According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, pregnant women who took the drug Topamax are at an increased risk for delivering a child with oral birth defects. Depending on the severity of the case, a child born with such defects may face:

Drug Company Negligence Can Be Costly

Providing a child with a birth defect everything he needs to grow up normally and live a full, productive life can be expensive. Not only are there medical expenses, but parents may need to take off work to care for their child.  The family may need counseling to deal with the stress and the worry.

The story of Moira represents a typical case of drug company negligence. The drug’s manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, had not adequately tested the drug or warned doctors and patients what could happen if it was taken by pregnant women.

Because Johnson & Johnson did not adequately warn women about the dangers of Topamax, the company can be held liable under the law to compensate victims for their losses, including all current and future medical expenses and associated emotional distress.

Anyone who suspects their child was injured by Topamax or topiramate should contact an experienced attorney as soon as possible.  Attorneys at Janet, Jenner and Suggs are nationally recognized advocates for people who have been harmed by dangerous products and will be happy to answer questions and provide consultation free of charge.

Topamax in the News

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March, 2011, ordered stronger warnings placed on these drugs after a review of pregnancy databases showed a higher risk for cleft lip and cleft palate. Topamax is prescribed not only for migraines but also as an anti-seizure drug.
